The Influence of Alcohol, Drug Use and Aggressive Impulsiveness on Delinquent Behavior among Korean Adolescents


Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study were (1) to determine the mean difference in research variables such as family, personality, aggressive impulsiveness, alcohol-drug use between student and delinquent adolescents, and (2) to examine the extent of influence of research variables on the delinquent behavior among Korean adolescents. Method: Data collection was done through questionnaire survey. The subjects consisted 1,948 adolescents(784 delinquents and 1,164 students). Proportional stratified random sampling method used. The major measuring instrument was the Mental Health Questionnaire for Korean Adolescents. The Cronbach¢¥s a of the subscales ranged from .54-.93. Statistical methods employed were chi-square, West and path analysis. Results: (1) The delinquent adolescents were reared in the more dysfunctional family dynamics, and have the higher maladaptive personality, higher alcohol drug use, and higher level of aggressive impulsiveness than the student adolescents. (2) The most powerful contributor on delinquent behavior were aggressive impulsiveness, drug use, antisocial personality, alcohol use, parent-child relationship, age, psychosomatic symptom, and relationship between family in this order named. Conclusion: Our findings indicated that aggressive impulsiveness, drug use and alcohol drinking were the strongest contributing factors on delinquent behavior. However, family dynamics, personality, sex and age were also contribute to occurrence of the delinquent behavior as an important mediating variables.
